Your skin has a remarkable ability to repair itself — and microneedling works with that ability rather than against it. If you've been wondering whether collagen induction therapy is right for you, this guide explains exactly how it works, what it can treat, and what to expect from your first treatment at our Carnforth salon.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling — sometimes called collagen induction therapy — is a skin treatment that uses a precision device with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the surface of the skin. These tiny, controlled micro-injuries are invisible to the naked eye, but they trigger your body's natural wound-healing response. As your skin repairs itself, it produces fresh collagen and elastin — the two proteins that give skin its firmness, bounce and smooth texture. The result, over a series of treatments, is skin that looks brighter, firmer and more even.
The Science of Collagen Induction
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, and it's the scaffolding that keeps skin firm and smooth. From your mid-20s onwards, your natural collagen production slows by roughly 1% a year. By your 40s, that slowdown — combined with sun exposure, lifestyle and hormonal changes — starts to show as fine lines, uneven tone and a general loss of firmness. Microneedling is one of the few treatments that genuinely encourages your skin to make new collagen, rather than just temporarily plumping or resurfacing what's already there. The improvements are gradual and cumulative — which is why a course of treatments is more effective than a single session.
What Can Microneedling Treat?
Because it works with your skin's own biology, microneedling is remarkably versatile. At Gilded Dreams we use it to address:
- Fine lines and early wrinkles
- Acne scarring and other superficial scars
- Enlarged pores and uneven texture
- Pigmentation, sun damage and melasma
- Loss of firmness on the face, neck and décolletage
- Crepey skin on the hands
It works on all skin types and tones, including darker complexions where some laser treatments aren't suitable. Your therapist will recommend a tailored plan at your consultation.
Mesotherapy vs Exosomes
Adding a skin booster to your microneedling treatment takes results further. The micro-channels created by the device allow active ingredients to penetrate far more effectively than topical application. At Gilded Dreams we offer two main boosters:
Mesotherapy cocktails. A bespoke blend of active ingredients matched to your skin. PDRN polynucleotides repair damaged cells and boost hydration; Argireline relaxes expression lines for a Botox-like effect around eyes, forehead and lips; Brightening blends fade pigmentation and even skin tone; DMAE firms and restores elasticity.
Exosomes. Ultra-tiny messenger particles that signal your skin to regenerate faster, calm inflammation, deeply hydrate and support collagen and elastin. Exosomes are particularly popular for sensitive or reactive skin, and for clients wanting maximum cellular repair.
Your therapist will recommend the best option — or a combination — for your skin and your goals.
“Your skin knows how to heal. Microneedling simply reminds it how.”
— Jennifer Handford, Owner & Senior Aesthetician
Your First Treatment — What to Expect
A microneedling appointment at our Carnforth salon takes around 60 to 75 minutes. You'll arrive with bare, clean skin — no makeup, SPF or active products. After a short consultation, your therapist will cleanse your skin again, then guide the IMedPen device across your face and neck in overlapping passes. Most clients describe the sensation as a light vibration with very mild pressure — around 3 out of 10 on a discomfort scale. We finish with a calming mask and apply SPF before you leave. Mineral makeup can be worn after 24 hours, and most people return to normal activities the same day.
A free 15-minute patch test is offered before your first full session so you can see how your skin responds.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
It depends on what you're treating:
- Fine lines, wrinkles, mild sun damage — 3 to 4 treatments
- Acne scarring, stretch marks — 5 to 6 treatments
- Deep wrinkles, severe scarring — 8 to 12 treatments
Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart so your skin has time to fully heal and rebuild between visits. Most clients see meaningful improvement after the second or third session, with continued progress for several months after the course finishes. Results can last anywhere from several months to a year — touch-up sessions every six months or so help maintain them.
Our course-of-three memberships include complimentary Calming Bliss and Sunfilm SPF 30 aftercare (RRP £75) plus 30% off Juliette Armand creams or serums.
Aftercare — The First 7 Days
For the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment, your skin will look and feel like a mild to moderate sunburn — pink, tight and warm. This is normal and settles quickly. For the first week:
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid direct sun and apply SPF 30+ every morning (physical sunscreen, not chemical)
- Avoid active skincare ingredients — retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, benzoyl peroxide
- No makeup for 24 hours; mineral makeup only after that
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming pools and intense exercise
- Don't pick or exfoliate — let any flaking skin shed naturally
- Use the Calming Bliss post-session topical we provide, as directed
After day 3 you can gently exfoliate to lift any flaky skin, return to regular skincare from day 3 to 5, and apply collagen-stimulating peptides and a low-dose vitamin A to support the rebuilding process. Full aftercare is provided at your appointment, and your therapist is on hand between sessions if you have any questions.
Is Microneedling Right for You?
Microneedling is suitable for almost everyone — but not for everyone right now. You should wait or avoid treatment if you have:
- Active cold sores, psoriasis, eczema or skin infections in the treatment area
- A history of keloid scarring
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding
- You've had Botox, fillers, chemical peels or cosmetic tattooing in the last 2 weeks
- You're taking Roaccutane or have active skin cancer
- Open lesions or undiagnosed moles
If any of the above apply to you, please tell us before booking — we'll advise on the right timing or alternative treatments. If you'd like to chat through whether microneedling is right for your skin, book a free patch test or consultation with our Carnforth team or call us on 01524 732281.
